KEY INSIGHT: The Iriomote Wildcat (イリオモテヤマネコ, Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis) is critically endangered and endemic to Japan's Iriomote Island. With a slender body, grayish-brown fur, and distinctive white facial markings, it inhabits mangrove forests and mountains, preying nocturnally on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Despite its majestic presence, human activities and habitat fragmentation pose severe threats, reducing its population to around 100-110 individuals. Conservation efforts concentrate on preserving its habitat, mitigating human-wildlife conflicts, and fostering awareness to rescue this rare species from the brink of extinction.
